  • Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour, September 17th

Posted on August 27th, 2010 admin No comments

We have scheduled a tour of the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Winthrop, MA on Friday, September 17th from ~ 1 pm to 5 pm. Space is limited, so please sign up HERE to reserve your place. Registration will be closed by 5 pm on September 3rd.

The Deer Island facility is one of the largest WWTPs in the US and has incorporated several renewable energy initiatives. We were able to confirm an enthusiastic, long-time plant employee to take us on the tour and we will likely be joined by folks from NEWEA and NEWWA (local professional associations for the water and wastewater industry).

Additional info on the plant is available here:

Vigorous walking over a 1.5 to 2 mile route
    Some amount of stair climbing
Reasonably protective clothing (e.g no open toe shoes)
Security clearance form to be filled out by Sept 3rd

    Hello all

    A couple of announcements below…

Please join EWB-Boston in the viewing of the 2008 documentary “Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders” at the Kendall Square Theater in Cambridge on Wednesday, June 16 (one of the last screenings in Boston). The summary and a link to the trailer are available on our calendar. We’ll be heading to Cambridge Brewing Company (a short walk from the Theater) afterward for a drink and discussion. If you are interested in joining us, please sign up here: http://tiny.cc/yz6bx

The more the merrier, so please bring friends and family along. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Bree at bree.carlson@gmail.com Please note: Engineers Without Borders is not affiliated with Doctors Without Borders.

EWB Boston is planning a tour of the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in East Boston next month. The Deer Island facility is one of the largest WWTPs in the US and has incorporated several renewable energy initiatives. Additional info on the facility is available at the following links:
    http://www.mwra.state.ma.us/03sewer/html/renewableenergydi.htm
    http://www.mwra.state.ma.us/03sewer/html/sewditp.htm

We want to gauge your interest in attending the tour on a Tuesday or a Friday. Unfortunately, tours can’t be hosted on a weekend. The plant is not the most accessible one (location) so we want to make sure we’ll get a good turnout. If you are interested, please reply saying “Yes” and which day you prefer. If we get a good response, we’ll finalize a date and follow up with additional details.

    Greetings

Thanks to everyone who volunteered for the Charles River cleanup on April 24. A few pictures from the cleanup have been uploaded here. We also have a few pictures on our website from the Rainwater Catchment seminar held over the weekend at UMass Dartmouth.

New Projects: EWB USA has several projects that are up for adoption. If you are interested in learning more about these projects, please let me know. The Exec Committee will work with you to decide if we should pursue a particular project application based on available resources and commitment from volunteers. Please note that the application process is lengthy and there is a lot of paperwork to be done and even if we were to submit a completed application today, a project can only start in early Fall.

On May 25th, Jennifer Ese O from the Institute of Human Centered Design will be giving a presentation on Universal Design and Development. Location TBA.

On June 7th, we are organizing a Beer Tasting Event and tour of the Harpoon Brewery in South Boston. This is a private event for EWB Boston. Sign up information and additional details available here Please sign up by June 1st.

Our next general chapter meeting is on June 9th at the Robbins Library in Arlington from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The EWB student chapter at UMass Amherst will be giving a presentation on their projects on Brazil and Kenya.

We are also organizing a golf tournament and fundraiser scheduled for August 21st. We need lots of help for this to be a successful event. Please let me know if you are interested in helping and I can give you more details.

    Regards,
    Ravi Bandi
